01-31-12 ATTEMPTED ESCAPE BEING INVESTIGATED
The Fayette County Sheriff's Office is investigating what appears to be an attempted inmate escape from the local jail. On Saturday at around 9 p.m., deputies in the Corrections Division "were alerted to a jail security camera which had been compromised within a cell area on the first floor of the Fayette County Jail," said Sheriff Vernon Stanforth. Additional deputies were called to the jail and inmates being held in the cell were moved to another secure location within the jail, allowing deputies to thoroughly examine the cell area.
"As deputies checked the cell area, several factors led deputies to the conclusion that an escape attempt was the likely motive for compromising the security camera in the cell," said Stanforth. Not all of those factors were disclosed to the Record-Herald as they remain under investigation. Sheriff's detectives were called in to start an investigation, preserving articles within the cell area as evidence and conducting interviews with inmates held in the cell area.
"Detectives are continuing their investigation of the incident, and upon conclusion, the case will be presented to the Fayette County Prosecutor's Office where additional criminal charges against inmate or inmates involved in the incident are likely," said Stanforth.

Vernon Stanforth, at 8:47 a.m. Thursday morning, a resident on
Bloomingburg-New Holland Road called the Sheriff’s Office, reporting that a
rear window of the residence was broken out by subjects attempting to gain
entry into the home. When the subjects realized the resident was inside the
home, the subjects fled into a standing cornfield at the rear of the
residence. “Several deputies responded to the area and established a
perimeter around the 400+ acre cornfield”, said the sheriff. Once the
perimeter was in place, deputies started a track of the subjects from the
location they entered the cornfield. After several hours of tracking the
subjects through the corn, the Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of
the “tower engine” from the Washington C.H. Fire Department and the Columbus
Police Department helicopter for air support in an attempt to locate the
subjects. “Due to the large area and the numerous areas of cover available
