The Fayette County S.T.A.R. Team (Sheriff's Tactically Armed Response Team) was established in 1997. Due to the increasing number of incidents that called for special tactics, it was determined that there was a need for specially trained officers to carry out these high risk missions in a safe and efficient manner for all concerned. The team consists of 12 officers, both full time and auxiliary. Some of the typical missions that the S.T.A.R. Team might carry out would include: Drug raids, barricaded persons and jail extrication of violent or disruptive prisoners. The team is commanded by Chief Alan Witherspoon.
