Sheriff Vernon P. Stanforth began serving as Fayette County Sheriff on January
06, 1997 after a 15 year tenure as a member of the Washington Court House Police Department.
Sheriff Stanforth and his wife, Joy, are the parents of two children. Their daughter Kristy is
married to Nathan Bowers and their son David is a student at Mt. Vernon Nazarene College.
Over the years, Sheriff Stanforth has been involved in numerous civic and social organizations
including being a past president of the Washington Court House Kiwanis Club and a past president
of the Jaycees. Sheriff Stanforth was active in the formation of the local Police Athletic League
and served as the PAL sponsored Law Enforcement Explorer Post advisor for several years.
Three of Sheriff Stanforth's Explorer Post members are now full time Deputy Sheriffs serving
under Sheriff Stanforth, and three other past members are currently in law enforcement
positions in other agencies.
Sheriff Stanforth is a graduate of the FBI's National Academy Session #205. He currently
serves under a governor's appointment to the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and
the Ohio Jail Advisory Board. Sheriff Stanforth has been a district director for the Buckeye
State Sheriff's Association for several years.
